In a league where everything comes down to the wire, the rollerhockey finals
were probably the most exciting Le Rinque has ever seen. In game 1 the Swiss
showed everyone at the rink why they were the best team in the regular
season. With the game being tied all the way till the 3rd period, The
Nordiques fell asleep and the Swiss took full advantage. Marc Geylman netted
4 goals and had 2 assists to lead his team to a game one 8-5 victory.
Game 2 was a completley different story. The first and second periods were
all Nordiques. Jeremy Frolich and Pat Gatusso both had a pair of goals, and
Marc Costandi put one in to put the Nordiques up 5-0 going into the 3rd
period. The Nordiques defence was stellar, as well as net minder Josh
Naygeboren who put on a display of pure brilliance between the posts.
Finally in the 3rd the Swiss woke up and put in 3 quick goals, but it wasn't
enough. After the game Zack Stermer was interviewed and said, "we came into
this game thinking the championship was ours. We had champagne and
everything ready for our victory. If this is the reason why we lose game
three i will gladly give the nordiques our bottle of champagne." The captain
of the Nordiques witnessed this statement, and the deal was made. Off to
game 3.
Championship game, Nordiques vs Swiss, top 2 teams in the roller hockey
division, facing off for one more game to hoist the championship trophy.
Both teams were more pumped up than they have have ever been, and with a
packed house we knew it was going to be a battle.
Period one was all Nordiques, Jeremy Frolich ripped a slap shot coming down
the wing to open the scoring. Josh Naygeboren held the swiss to no goals in
the first, and was looking to have a repeat performance from last game.
Beginning of the second the Swiss tie it up by a goal from Devon Stermer who
made a great move that fooled Naygeboren. The Swiss then take a bad roughing
penalty and the Nordiques took full advantage. With seconds ticking away in
the penalty, Costandi set up Daneil Sohmer in front of the net for his first
playoff goal.
Going into the 3rd period the Nordiques knew what they had to do to finish
off this game. And they did just that, until a minute and 20 seconds left in
the game, Marc Costandi takes a very bad penalty, and Corey Demberg from the
Swiss ties it up. 13 seconds later Jason Levy puts in the go ahead goal for
the Swiss. Now with only 40 seconds left, the Nordiques thought it was all
over, till Costandi ties it up once again. Five seconds later Levy scores
again by crashing the net, and the Swiss have 4-3 Lead with 35 seconds
remaining. And then the almost impossible happened, with only 13 seconds
left, Costandi scores a miracle goal to bring this game into overtime.
The crowd is buzzing with anticipation, and both teams are full of
adrenaline. The 10 minute overtime started off with a great display of
goaltending. Then with 4:50 left in the game, The Swiss take a very bad Too
many men penalty. The Nordiques call a time out to come up with their game
plan. We later heard that their plan was to stick Pat Gatusso in front of
the net, and thats exactly what they did. 30 seconds into the powerplay
Costandi takes a shot from the point, Pat grabs the rebound and puts in the
championship winning goal. "You couldn't script this game" said Julius
Frolich, father of Jeremy Frolich, after the game.
This was the second finals for the Nordiques, and after a disappointing
loss last season, finally got to taste victory. It was a sweet celebration
for the Nordiques, and yes Zack Stermer held up his part of the deal, and
gave the Nordiques the bottle of Champagne.
The Nordiques are gearing up for the next season, which is looking to be a
much bigger and more difficult league. They have only one thing in mind,
winning another championship.
Playoff MVP voted by both teams: G Josh Naygeboren from the Nordiques
